Canberra Raiders enforcer Josh Papalii made an emotional return to the NRL field on Sunday, scoring a try and dedicating it to a young fan battling cancer. The 31-year-old prop, who had been sidelined with a hamstring injury, crossed the line in the 30-18 victory over the Wests Tigers at GIO Stadium.
Papalii's Emotional Tribute
After scoring in the 48th minute, Papalii pointed to the crowd and made a heart sign with his hands, a gesture aimed at 12-year-old Raiders fan Jack, who is undergoing treatment for leukemia. "I just wanted to do something special for him," Papalii said. "He's been through a lot, and I wanted to let him know we're all thinking of him."
Injury Comeback
The try was Papalii's first since round 10, having missed four weeks with the hamstring issue. He finished the match with 128 running metres and 28 tackles, playing a key role in the Raiders' third consecutive win. "It was good to get back out there and contribute," he added. "The boys have been working hard, and we're building some momentum."
Fan Support
Jack, who has been a regular at Raiders games, was watching from home and posted a message on social media thanking Papalii. "Thank you Josh, that meant so much to me," Jack wrote. "I'm fighting hard, and seeing you score made my day." The Raiders have since arranged for Jack to meet the team at their next training session.
Raiders' Playoff Push
The win lifted Canberra to seventh on the NRL ladder, keeping them in contention for a top-four spot. Coach Ricky Stuart praised Papalii's impact: "Josh is a leader in this group, and his return gives us a real boost. But what he did for that young fan shows the kind of person he is." The Raiders face the Sydney Roosters next Saturday in a crucial clash.
