Queensland jockey Shane McGovern, 67, has died from injuries sustained in a horse riding accident in early April. The incident occurred at a regional track in Charters Towers, where McGovern was trapped underneath a horse that had collapsed and died from an aneurysm.
McGovern was not discovered for six hours and suffered extensive leg injuries. He was taken to Townsville University Hospital, where doctors amputated both legs. However, an infection and post-operation complication led to his transfer to palliative care last week.
The Australian Jockeys Association confirmed McGovern's death, noting that a report would be prepared for the state coroner. McGovern is survived by his wife Kim and their three children.
Racing Queensland acting chief executive Lachlan Murray described McGovern as a 'natural horseman' who was 'universally loved and admired.' The Jockeys Association is raising funds to support McGovern's family as funeral arrangements are made.
