Gungahlin Lakes Golf Course is grappling with a series of vandalism incidents involving electric scooters and motorbikes. The course is working with police to identify the culprits and plans to install security cameras to deter further damage.
Chief financial officer Anthony Pickrell said the problem has been ongoing for months, with the latest incident occurring on Wednesday. Vandals have been riding on greens, causing significant damage that takes time to repair. The issue tends to spike during school holidays.
In a separate incident months ago, a swastika was burned into the green on the first hole. Members have expressed frustration on social media, but Pickrell urged them not to take matters into their own hands and to report incidents to staff.
Pickrell noted that the open nature of the course makes it difficult to prevent unauthorized access. He said police need identifiable information to act, and the new cameras will provide live feeds to speed up responses. The rise of electric scooters and motorbikes has made such vandalism more common.
