A comprehensive new study has ranked the best fans in the United Kingdom, with Premier League clubs taking the top positions. The research, conducted by sports data firm YouGov, analyzed factors including match attendance, stadium atmosphere, social media engagement, and fan loyalty to determine which clubs have the most dedicated supporters.
Top 10 Best Fans in the UK
According to the study, Manchester United fans rank first overall, scoring 92.4 out of 100. The club's global fanbase and consistent sell-out crowds at Old Trafford contributed to the high score. Liverpool came in second with 91.8 points, praised for their passionate home support and famous chants. Arsenal completed the top three with 91.2 points, driven by strong attendance and digital engagement.
The top 10 also includes Manchester City (90.5), Chelsea (89.7), Tottenham Hotspur (88.9), Newcastle United (88.1), Everton (87.3), West Ham United (86.5), and Aston Villa (85.8). Notably, only one non-Premier League club, Celtic, made the top 20, ranking 12th with 84.2 points.
Methodology and Key Findings
The study used a weighted index based on five categories: average home attendance as a percentage of stadium capacity (25%), decibel levels during matches (20%), social media followers and engagement (20%), fan loyalty measured by season ticket renewals (20%), and away match attendance (15%). Data was collected from the 2023-24 season.
“Manchester United’s global reach and historic success give them an edge in digital metrics, but Liverpool’s Anfield atmosphere is unmatched,” said Dr. Emily Carter, lead researcher at YouGov. “The most surprising result was Newcastle’s rise, reflecting their recent resurgence and passionate local support.”
Newcastle United saw a 15% increase in average attendance after their takeover, while Everton’s loyal fanbase maintained high season ticket renewal rates despite on-field struggles.
Regional and League Variations
The study also broke down results by region. In Scotland, Celtic and Rangers dominated, with Celtic’s fanbase scoring highest for atmosphere. In the Championship, Leeds United ranked first overall with 82.1 points, followed by Sunderland (80.3) and Sheffield Wednesday (78.9). Lower league clubs like Wrexham (75.4) and Notts County (73.8) showed strong community support.
Women’s football fans were also assessed, with Arsenal Women topping the list (88.2), ahead of Chelsea Women (86.1) and Manchester United Women (84.7).
Impact on Clubs and Future Research
The rankings have implications for sponsorship and marketing, as clubs with higher fan engagement attract more commercial interest. “Brands are increasingly looking at fan loyalty metrics when choosing partnerships,” noted sports marketing expert James Turner. The study also highlights the importance of matchday experience in retaining supporters.
YouGov plans to update the rankings annually, incorporating new data from the upcoming season. The full list of 92 clubs is available on their website.
