South Korea Beat Qatar 2-0 to Reach World Cup Last 16

South Korea booked their spot in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Qatar at the Al Janoub Stadium on Wednesday. Goals from captain Son Heung-min and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu sealed the win, ensuring the Taeguk Warriors advance from Group H as runners-up behind Portugal.

First-Half Dominance

South Korea controlled the first half, pressing high and creating several chances. The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Son Heung-min latched onto a through ball from Lee Kang-in and slotted past Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb. It was Son's third goal of the tournament, moving him level with Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Golden Boot.

According to FIFA statistics, South Korea had 68% possession in the first half and registered 10 shots, with five on target. Qatar struggled to create opportunities, managing only two attempts, neither of which troubled South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.

Second-Half Sealer

Qatar came out with more intensity after the break, but South Korea doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Oh Hyeon-gyu, who had replaced Cho Gue-sung just minutes earlier, headed home a corner from Hwang In-beom to make it 2-0. The goal was Oh's first of the tournament and came at a crucial time, dampening Qatar's hopes of a comeback.

South Korea coach Jürgen Klinsmann praised his team's performance: "We knew Qatar would be tough opponents, but the players executed the game plan perfectly. The early goal gave us confidence, and we managed the game well after that. I'm proud of the team's character and discipline."

Group H Standings

The win leaves South Korea second in Group H with six points from three matches, behind Portugal who defeated Uruguay 3-1 to top the group with nine points. Qatar finish third with three points, while Uruguay are bottom with one point. South Korea will face the winner of Group G in the round of 16, which is likely to be Brazil or Switzerland.

This marks the second consecutive World Cup in which South Korea have reached the knockout stages, following their run to the last 16 in Qatar 2022. The team's progress has been built on a solid defensive record, conceding only two goals in the group stage.

Qatar's Disappointment

For Qatar, the defeat ends their World Cup campaign earlier than hoped. After reaching the round of 16 in 2022, the Asian champions struggled to replicate that form, winning only one match in Group H. Coach Tintín Márquez acknowledged his team's shortcomings: "We faced a very strong South Korean side. They were more clinical in front of goal. We need to learn from this experience and improve for the future."

Qatar's only goal of the tournament came in a 1-0 win over Uruguay, but defeats to Portugal and South Korea proved costly. The team will now focus on the 2027 Asian Cup, where they will aim to defend their title.
