Sonny Baker Revels in First Test Cricket Experience Against New Zealand
Sonny Baker Revels in First Test Against New Zealand

Sonny Baker described his first taste of Test cricket as a dream come true after the young fast bowler took three wickets on debut to help England seize control of the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

Baker's Stunning Debut

The 23-year-old, who was called up to replace the injured Mark Wood, claimed the key scalps of Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, and Daryl Mitchell to leave New Zealand reeling at 167 for five in reply to England's imposing first-innings total of 425.

Baker's pace and bounce proved too much for the Black Caps, with his extra pace generating sharp bounce that troubled the visitors' batsmen. His first Test wicket came when Williamson edged to slip, sparking wild celebrations from the debutant.

Speaking after the day's play, Baker said: "It's been an incredible day. To take my first Test wicket in front of this crowd is something I'll never forget. I've worked so hard for this moment, and to have it pay off is just brilliant."

England Dominate with Bat and Ball

Earlier, England's batsmen had laid the foundation for victory, with Joe Root scoring a fluent 134 and Ben Stokes adding a quickfire 89. The hosts posted 425 all out, with New Zealand's spinners taking four wickets between them.

In response, New Zealand struggled against England's pace attack, with Stuart Broad also chipping in with two wickets. The visitors still trail by 258 runs with five wickets in hand.

England captain Ben Stokes praised Baker's performance, saying: "Sonny was outstanding. He showed great character and skill on debut. To take three wickets against a quality side like New Zealand is a fantastic achievement."

Baker's Journey to Test Cricket

Baker's rise to Test cricket has been rapid. He only made his first-class debut for Yorkshire in 2023 but has since impressed with his raw pace and ability to generate bounce. His performances for England Lions earlier this year earned him a call-up to the senior squad.

With the second Test poised in England's favor, Baker will be hoping to add to his wicket tally when play resumes on day three.
