Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon has been diagnosed with a significant calf strain, casting doubt on his availability for the remainder of the Ashes series. The injury occurred late on day two of the second Test at Lord's when Lyon pulled up while fielding and was unable to put weight on his right leg as he was helped off the field.
Cricket Australia confirmed the diagnosis on the third morning of the Test, stating that Lyon will require a period of rehabilitation after the match. A decision regarding his availability for the rest of the series will be made at the conclusion of the game. Lyon, who became the first bowler to play 100 consecutive Tests by taking the field in London, took his 496th Test wicket shortly before the injury, putting his quest for 500 wickets on hold.
The tight schedule between Tests, with only a three-day gap between the end of the Lord's Test and the start of the third Test at Headingley, leaves little time for recovery. Australia has off-spinner Todd Murphy in the extended squad, who made his Test debut in India earlier this year and took 14 wickets in four Tests. For the remainder of the Lord's Test, Australia will rely on part-time spinner Travis Head, with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne also available as bowling options.
