A local cricket match in rural New South Wales was abandoned on Saturday after a charging bull stormed onto the pitch, sending players and umpires scrambling for cover. The incident occurred during a community fixture at the Boggabilla Oval, near the Queensland border, when the bull broke through a fence and ran directly at the field.
Match halted as bull charges
The game, part of the local country cricket competition, was in its second innings when the bull entered the ground. Witnesses reported that the animal, estimated to weigh over 800 kilograms, knocked over a boundary marker before charging at the wicketkeeper. Players from both teams ran towards the pavilion, while some spectators climbed onto picnic tables. No injuries were reported, but the match was immediately called off.
Officials confirm abandonment
Boggabilla Cricket Club president Sarah Thompson confirmed that the match was abandoned for safety reasons. “We’ve never seen anything like it. The bull just came out of nowhere and headed straight for the players. Everyone is shaken but thankfully no one was hurt,” she said. Local police and a veterinarian were called to the scene. The bull was eventually tranquilized and returned to its owner.
The match was in a tight contest, with the home team needing 45 runs to win with five wickets in hand. The result has been recorded as a draw under competition rules, as less than 20 overs were completed after the incident.
Community reaction
Residents of Boggabilla, a small town of about 600 people, expressed shock and amusement. “It’s not every day you see a bull play cricket,” said local farmer Tom Harris. The club is now reviewing fencing around the oval to prevent future incidents. The match will be rescheduled for later in the season.
