Bosnia and Herzegovina on Verge of Knockout Stage After Beating Qatar
Bosnia on Verge of Knockout Stage After Qatar Win

Bosnia and Herzegovina moved to the verge of the knockout stage for the first time after a 3-1 victory over Qatar, with a stunning goal from 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic and a decisive third from Ermin Mahmic. The win, which eliminated Qatar, puts Bosnia in a strong position to advance, likely setting up a last-32 clash with the USA in Santa Clara.

Alajbegovic Shines with Spectacular Opener

Alajbegovic, who had been kept on the bench in the opener against Canada, started his second consecutive match and justified the decision with a brilliant goal just before the half-hour mark. Picking up Ivan Basic's pass outside the box, he drifted from left to right, jinked past two defenders, and blasted a 20-yard shot into the top corner past Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada. The goal highlighted why Bayer Leverkusen activated an €8m buyback clause to re-sign him from RB Salzburg.

Bosnia dominated early, with Ermedin Demirovic forcing a save within 70 seconds and Ivan Sunjic testing Abunada a minute later. Sunjic, formerly of Birmingham City, also made a crucial defensive play, racing 70 yards to deny Akram Afif after losing the ball in attack.

Dzeko and Own Goal Double Lead

Bosnia doubled their lead five minutes after the opener, though it came via an own goal. Captain Edin Dzeko, earning his 150th cap, attempted to cushion a diagonal pass into Esmir Bajraktarevic, but the ball deflected off Sultan al-Brake's shins and beat Abunada at his near post. Dzeko then hit the post with a low effort after a clever chipped pass.

Qatar pulled one back before halftime through captain Hassan al-Haydos, who pounced on slack defending to convert Edmílson Junior's pullback. Qatar nearly equalized in stoppage time when Pedro Miguel's low shot struck the post.

Second-Half Adjustments and Third Goal

Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarez made two halftime substitutions, introducing Amar Memic and Benjamin Tahirovic, and later withdrew Dzeko to a warm ovation. Despite Alajbegovic's continued threat, Bosnia failed to put the game away until the hydration break. Sead Kolasinac sparked a counterattack, Bajraktarevic forced a save, and from the rebound, Mahmic fired in the third goal. Mahmic whipped off his shirt in celebration as the knockout stage came into view.

"If you see a boy like that in the two most important games of his career so far, it means that this boy has something and quality," Dzeko said of Alajbegovic before the tournament. The teenager's impact has been pivotal, having scored penalties in shootout wins over Wales and Italy to help Bosnia qualify.
