Two University of Notre Dame law students have described their experience competing against future lawyers from around the world as a "once in a lifetime opportunity." Eva Medenis and Claudia Turner, final-year Bachelor of Law students at the university's Fremantle campus, represented Australia at the Brown-Mosten International Client Consultation Competition held in Zagreb, Croatia, in April 2026.
Path to the International Stage
The duo earned their place on the world stage after a top performance at the Australian Law Students' Association Client Interview Competition, where they outperformed teams from 15 Australian universities. At the international competition, they faced teams from 18 countries, securing second place in two preliminary rounds against Northern Ireland and Ireland, as well as New Zealand and Germany.
Learning from Global Competition
Although they did not advance to the semifinals, Medenis expressed gratitude for the opportunity. "Competing against international teams from such a wide range of jurisdictions and making new friendships and connections was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, one we will carry with us long beyond our degrees," she said. Turner highlighted the cultural differences in legal interviewing styles. "There was a real contrast between the conversational and client-focused style typically adopted in Australia and the more traditional and formalised approach expected by many of the European judges," she noted. "This was a valuable learning experience and gave us a broader perspective on cross-cultural legal practice."
Commitment to Sharing Knowledge
Both students are committed to passing on the insights they gained to benefit future Notre Dame students. The competition also included sightseeing, dinners, and networking opportunities with other teams and coaches.
