The Socceroos have pulled off one of their greatest ever victories with a stunning 2-0 upset win over Turkey at the World Cup.
Irankunda makes history
Nestory Irankunda, aged 20, became Australia's youngest World Cup goalscorer with a brilliant goal in the 27th minute. Connor Metcalfe sealed the victory with a glorious solo effort in the 75th minute.
The win at Vancouver's BC Place sets up an enthralling clash with co-hosts the United States in Seattle on Friday.
"It's epic. It's unreal. Like, it's a dream come true," Irankunda told SBS. "People underestimate us a lot, and we showed them today that we can play."
Bold selections pay off
Coach Tony Popovic, the first Australian to play and coach at a World Cup, was rewarded for starting Irankunda and picking Patrick Beach over captain Maty Ryan.
Beach made stunning saves, including a fingertip stop to turn Abdulkerim Bardakci's fierce strike onto the post and denying Real Madrid star Arda Guler's dipping free kick.
"I found out a few days ago and my immediate reaction was real excitement and joy," Beach said of his shock selection.
Young squad shines
There were 10 World Cup debutants in the starting line-up, with an average age of 24.6. Captain Harry Souttar was the only player with previous World Cup experience.
Irankunda paid tribute to his idol Tim Cahill with his celebration, boxing the corner flag after scoring. "Tim Cahill, Australia's greatest in my opinion, and I just thought if I scored, I'll do the same as him," he said.
Australia's desperately brilliant defence held firm despite a late Turkish barrage, securing the first opening group stage win since 2006.
