Belgium's 4-1 victory over the United States in the World Cup round of 16 was not just a triumph on the pitch but also a statement off it. The Red Devils advanced to the quarter-finals while venting their frustration at what they considered an injustice: the suspension of a red card for US striker Folarin Balogun.
Controversy Before Kickoff
The match was overshadowed by controversy after Fifa overturned Balogun's red card from the previous round against Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing him to play against Belgium instead of serving a one-match ban. The decision came after former US President Donald Trump lobbied for the overturn, sparking outrage from Belgium and other nations. Uefa described the move as 'incomprehensible and unjustifiable'.
Belgium's Response on the Pitch
Belgium's official X account posted a message immediately after the 4-1 win: 'Overturn this,' accompanied by images of Belgian goal celebrations. Captain Youri Tielemans acknowledged the controversy fueled the team's motivation. 'Let's be honest: we held a meeting when we heard the news,' Tielemans said. 'We told ourselves we needed to do our talking on the pitch. That's what we did today. I'm very proud of the team.'
Focus Amid Distraction
Winger Dodi Lukébakio said the team remained focused despite the distraction. 'We didn't understand really why he was allowed to play, because he got the red card, but we didn't want to go too much into it, we wanted to be focused and to play our game, and that's what we did today,' he explained.
What's Next
Belgium will face Spain on Friday for a place in the semi-finals, carrying the momentum of both their victory and their sense of vindication.
