Five Manchester City players have been named in the Professional Footballers’ Association Premier League Team of the Year, following their Premier League title win. The selections include defenders Nicolás Otamendi and Kyle Walker, midfielders Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva, and forward Sergio Agüero.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who leads the Premier League scoring chart with 30 goals, joins Agüero and Tottenham’s Harry Kane, who has 26 league goals, in the attacking line-up. Tottenham have three selections overall, with playmaker Christian Eriksen and central defender Jan Vertonghen also included.
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is the only Red Devil in the team, while Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso completes the XI, despite Chelsea’s disappointing title defence. Alonso held off competition from Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Tottenham’s Ben Davies.
The PFA Player of the Year award will be announced on Sunday, with De Bruyne, De Gea, Kane, Silva, Salah, and City winger Leroy Sané all nominated. Sané was surprisingly omitted from the Team of the Year.
In the Championship, Wolves have three players in the PFA Team of the Year: goalkeeper John Ruddy, defender Willy Boly, and midfielder Ruben Neves. Fulham also have three representatives: defender Ryan Fredericks, wing-back Ryan Sessegnon, and midfielder Tom Cairney.
Other Championship selections include Cardiff’s Sol Bamba, Norwich’s James Maddison, Bristol City’s Bobby Reid, Sheffield United’s Leon Clarke, and Derby’s Matej Vydra. Sessegnon, 17, is also on the shortlist for the PFA young player of the year award.
