Craig Bellamy Shuts Down Reporters Over Personal Questions

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has refused to disclose details about his health condition, insisting the focus should remain on the team's performance. The 66-year-old is battling an unspecified neurodegenerative disorder, as revealed by the club last week.

Speaking at AAMI Park ahead of Sunday's clash with Wests Tigers, Bellamy told reporters: “At the end of the day, this is private to me, and footy’s what you’re here for.” The Storm are seeking to end a record-extending seven-match losing streak.

Bellamy, who has coached Melbourne since 2003, recently signed a contract through to 2028. However, he was non-committal about coaching next season, saying: “I don’t know yet, but I’m thinking about this week.” Specialists have advised that his diagnosis will not affect his ability to coach in the immediate future.

The veteran coach expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received since his condition became public. “I was surprised how much support… the support’s been unbelievable,” he said, apologising for not replying to messages due to his focus on football.

Bellamy acknowledged the challenges of this season, including the departures of key players, injuries to Eli Katoa and Tui Kamikamica, and the losing streak. “We’ve just got to get on with what we’ve got and work out what the best plan is,” he said.

The Storm have not lost to Wests Tigers in eight matches and at home since 2018. Bellamy highlighted the need to avoid second-half fade-outs, noting: “It’s obviously a bit of a switch-off of their concentration… we’ve had a few ideas to try and solve it.”
