Cook and Saffioti Form Joint Ticket in WA Labor Leadership Race

Deputy Premier Roger Cook has emerged as the most likely successor to Mark McGowan, with Transport Minister Rita Saffioti as his deputy, following the premier's shock resignation. The pair announced a joint ticket late this afternoon, aiming to defeat Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson, who earlier secured support from MPs aligned to the United Workers Union.

Unless either Cook or Sanderson withdraws, a five-week ballot process will begin, with Cook acting as premier during that time. Saffioti confirmed her support for Cook, stating they offer stable leadership for the state. The left-aligned Australian Manufacturing Workers Union has backed Cook, splitting the left faction after the United Workers Union supported Sanderson.

Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson said the AMWU's decision was based on what is best for Western Australia, highlighting Cook's role in the COVID-19 response. Sanderson earlier claimed a clear majority of factional support and pledged to focus on unity and stability. The party aims to avoid a lengthy ballot, with parliament due to sit in a fortnight.

Cook expressed confidence in uniting the party and maintaining the momentum built under McGowan. Former premier Geoff Gallop acknowledged McGowan's successor faces a challenging task but expressed confidence in the process.
