ACT Policing made two separate arrests overnight, with a man in Ainslie found with an imitation firearm and another in Gungahlin accused of assaulting his partner and damaging her property.
Gungahlin assault leads to multiple charges
Police were called to a residence in Gungahlin after 7:30pm on Friday, January 16, following reports of a domestic incident. A 50-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted and threatened his female partner.
It is further alleged the man burnt some of the woman's personal belongings in a brazier. He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated common assault, property damage, aggravated property damage, and using a carriage service to menace.
Ainslie man breaches bail, imitation pistol found
In an unrelated incident, officers arrested a 47-year-old man at his home in the inner-north suburb of Ainslie. The arrest was made after he allegedly breached his bail conditions by repeatedly texting and calling a woman he was prohibited from contacting.
When he was processed at the ACT Watch House, police searched his bags. They located an imitation firearm and several items suspected of being stolen. The man was subsequently charged with contravening a family violence order, unauthorised possession of a prohibited firearm, and unlawful possession of stolen property.
Court appearances and ongoing investigations
Both men are scheduled to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.
These arrests come as ACT Policing continues a separate, major investigation into the discovery of more than a dozen explosive devices across Canberra this week. Police recovered 15 pipe bombs in north Canberra near Lake Ginninderra earlier in the week, followed by further devices found near Duffy oval on Thursday.
Investigators have stated they do not believe the Duffy explosives are linked to the pipe bombs found near the lake. An ACT Policing spokesperson confirmed there had been no further reports of explosives as of Saturday.
