Authorities in Geelong are investigating a suspicious house fire that tore through a property in Whittington on Tuesday night, causing significant damage and prompting a major emergency response.
Emergency Response to Wilsons Road Blaze
Emergency services were called to the scene on Wilsons Road in Whittington just after 10:30 PM on Tuesday, April 9. Firefighters from the Country Fire Authority (CFA) arrived to find the single-storey brick veneer home well alight. Crews worked for over an hour to bring the intense blaze under control, finally containing it by 11:45 PM.
Images from the scene show the devastating aftermath, with the roof of the home completely destroyed and the interior gutted by flames. The property sustained major structural damage. Fortunately, no one was inside the home at the time of the fire, and no injuries have been reported.
Police Treat Fire as Suspicious
Victoria Police have confirmed they are treating the fire as suspicious. Detectives from the Geelong Crime Investigation Unit have taken charge of the probe. A police spokesperson stated that the exact cause of the blaze is yet to be determined and is under active investigation.
Forensic specialists and fire investigators have combed through the charred remains of the property, searching for evidence to determine how the fire started. The speed and intensity of the flames have raised immediate red flags for authorities.
Appeal for Witnesses and Information
Police are now urging anyone with information to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking to witnesses who were in the Wilsons Road area of Whittington between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM on Tuesday night.
Investigators are also appealing for any drivers with dashcam footage who travelled along Wilsons Road or nearby streets during that crucial hour. Anyone who saw suspicious activity or has information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers or the Geelong Police Station.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to piece together the events that led to the destructive fire.
