Robodebt Victims: Final Hours to Claim $548.5M Compensation

Robodebt Victims Have Final Hours to Secure Historic Compensation Deal

Thousands of Australians impacted by the Robodebt scheme are facing a critical deadline, with only hours remaining to register for their share of a historic compensation settlement. Registrations close on March 6, marking the end of a prolonged legal battle that exposed systemic failures in the automated debt-recovery system.

Landmark Legal Battle and Royal Commission Findings

The deadline follows a landmark legal appeal initiated in September 2024, sparked by the Royal Commission's damning revelations. The Commission uncovered evidence that senior public servants knew the Robodebt scheme was unlawful from its inception but allowed it to operate for years, targeting some of the nation's most vulnerable welfare recipients. Government Services Minister Bill Shorten has described the scheme as "illegal" and "unlawful from the start," with the Albanese government accepting these findings.

Appeal and Record-Breaking Settlement

The Robodebt Class Action Appeal, led by applicants Nathan Knox and David Mandell and represented by Gordon Legal, argued that the original settlement should be revisited to pursue further compensation. The appeal centered on misfeasance in public office, alleging that officials acted unlawfully and with reckless indifference to the harm caused. In September 2025, the appeal settled for $548.5 million, the largest class action settlement in Australian legal history. This payout is in addition to:

  • $112 million in compensation and legal costs from the original class action.
  • Billions in unlawful debts forgiven, cancelled, or repaid by the Commonwealth after the scheme collapsed.

If approved, the combined effect of these actions will total more than $2.4 billion recovered from the federal government for the benefit of group members.

Urgent Deadline for Registration

With the March 6 deadline now imminent, victims who have not yet registered must complete the required steps before 4pm on Friday, March 6, or risk missing out on their share of this record-breaking settlement. Eligible Centrelink recipients are urged to act quickly to secure their compensation.
