ACT Police Issue Urgent Alert After Multiple Pipe Bombs Found in Belconnen
Pipe Bomb Scare: Public Safety Alert for Belconnen

ACT Policing has issued an urgent public safety warning following the discovery of several dangerous pipe bombs in public areas of Belconnen this week.

Weapons Found Near Popular Lake

Community members have reported finding the improvised explosive devices on public paths in the vicinity of Lake Ginninderra, specifically between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive. The first report to police was made on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, with multiple further reports coming in on Wednesday, January 14.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the incidents, stating, "ACT Policing is warning the community of dangerous pipe bombs which have been located on public paths in Belconnen this week." She added that officers had responded to "several" reports over the two-day period.

Identical Devices Prompt Concern

Investigators have released images of the recovered bombs, noting that all appear identical. This suggests a potential connection between the devices. Police have not yet commented on the exact number found, and the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities have made a direct appeal to parents and guardians. "Police have asked the public to be aware of their surroundings and parents in particular to ensure their children don't pick the items up," the spokeswoman said.

Public Urged to Report, Not Touch

While there is no current information suggesting similar devices have been placed in other parts of Canberra, police are urging extreme caution. The public is advised on the critical steps to take if they encounter a suspicious item:

  • Do not touch or approach the item.
  • Immediately contact police on Triple Zero (000).
  • For reporting suspicious behaviour, call Police Assistance on 131 444.

"ACT Policing is urging anyone who locates a suspicious item within the area not to touch it and immediately contact police," the spokeswoman reiterated.

The discovery has raised significant concerns for local safety, with police dedicating resources to locate any further devices and investigate the source of the homemade weapons. The community is advised to remain vigilant while using public walkways in the affected area.
