Homicide detectives are investigating after a man was shot dead at a unit complex in Sydney's west on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to a unit block on Newman Street in Merrylands at approximately 6:40am on Saturday. Upon arrival, they discovered a 44-year-old man who had sustained a critical gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate efforts of police officers and paramedics at the scene, the man could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the location, marking a tragic start to the weekend for the local community.
