Bomb Threat in Canberra's Duffy: Suspicious Device Seized by Police
Bomb threat in Duffy, Canberra: Device seized

A bomb threat in a quiet Canberra suburb prompted a significant police response on Thursday morning, with officers seizing a suspicious explosive device.

Police Respond to Duffy Incident

ACT Policing confirmed they were called to Tantangara Street in the suburb of Duffy on Thursday, January 15, 2026, following a triple-zero report. The call concerned an explosive device found outdoors in the Weston Creek area.

A police spokeswoman stated that officers attended the scene and rendered the suspected explosive device safe. The item was subsequently seized by police for further investigation. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the device was a homemade weapon.

Local residents reported a noticeable police presence in the area, with multiple police vehicles seen on the street during the morning.

No Link to Belconnen Pipe Bombs

Police were quick to distinguish this incident from a separate and concerning series of discoveries in another part of the capital. Investigators confirmed the Duffy threat is unrelated to eleven dangerous pipe bombs recovered in the Belconnen area earlier in the week.

Those devices, described as "metallic cylindrical" objects, were found near Lake Ginninderra along Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive since Tuesday. The police bomb response unit destroyed the pipe bombs, some of which had been reported by the public and others located by officers.

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or property damage resulting from the Belconnen devices, despite some having already detonated.

Appeal for Information
