A suspicious fire that tore through an abandoned home in Whittington early this morning is the latest in a string of blazes targeting vacant properties across Geelong, authorities have confirmed.
Firefighters Battle Blaze in Whittington
Emergency services were called to the scene on Thompson Road around 2:30 a.m. after reports of flames engulfing the derelict house. Fire crews from Geelong and surrounding stations worked for over an hour to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to neighboring properties.
The structure, which had been unoccupied for several years, was completely destroyed. No injuries were reported, but the property is considered a total loss.
Police Investigate Suspicious Circumstances
Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad have been called in to investigate. Preliminary examinations indicate the fire may have been deliberately lit. Police are appealing for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area overnight to come forward.
This incident is the latest in a concerning pattern of fires at abandoned homes in the Geelong region. Over the past two months, at least four other vacant properties have been targeted in similar attacks.
Community Concerns Rise
Local residents have expressed growing unease over the spate of fires. “It’s worrying to see these places going up in flames,” said a nearby resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re concerned about safety and the potential for these fires to spread to occupied homes.”
Council officials have also weighed in, urging property owners to secure vacant buildings and report any suspicious behavior.
Crime Stoppers Appeal
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online. Police are particularly interested in footage from dashcams or security cameras in the area around the time of the fire.
This investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as details emerge.
