Two Teens in Custody After Alleged Violent Rampage at Cairns Bus Stop
Two teenagers have been taken into custody following an alleged violent rampage at a bus stop in Cairns, which resulted in injuries to three men, including an elderly Good Samaritan. The incident has sparked concerns about safety in the local community.
Details of the Assaults
Police were called to reports of multiple assaults at a shopping centre on Mulgrave Road in Earlville, Cairns, just before 6:20 AM on Wednesday. According to officers, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy first targeted a 58-year-old local man, who sustained minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.
A short time later, a 24-year-old man from Edmonton was allegedly attacked, wounded, and robbed at the same bus stop. He received treatment for a chest wound. Subsequently, a 69-year-old man who attempted to assist was allegedly assaulted, suffering a significant head injury.
Police Response and Arrests
Police provided first aid at the scene before paramedics transported the two injured men to Cairns Hospital in stable condition. The two suspects were arrested nearby shortly after the incidents. One was taken into custody at a property on Mestrez Street, approximately a 10-minute walk from the bus stop, around 8:45 AM. The other was arrested soon after at the intersection of Sunflower and Mestrez Streets.
Community Concerns and Investigation
Local residents expressed deep concern over the violence. One woman stated, "We live around this area too, so it's very scary." A long-time Cairns resident highlighted growing safety issues around shopping centres, saying, "This is how safe you are waiting for the bus ... it's ridiculous. You watch the shopping centres get more unsafe ... it's getting worse."
A crime scene has been declared around the shopping centre and nearby streets as investigations continue. Police are urging anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
