A 45-year-old man has been charged in connection with two suspicious fires in Perth, which police allege caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage and severely disrupted services for vulnerable children and families. According to police, the man allegedly targeted the Kids' Cancer Support Group House in West Leederville on the evening of January 7. The blaze is believed to have resulted in about $19,000 in damage, forcing a temporary halt to the organisation's operations. Police further allege that the same individual was responsible for a second fire less than two weeks later in Northbridge. In the early hours of January 20, around 3:15 am, several billboards attached to light posts along James and Lake streets were allegedly set alight. The man, who is currently in custody on unrelated matters, has been formally charged with two counts of breach of duty.
