Four individuals connected to a cocaine operation running through one of Cairns' most popular backpacker hostels have faced sentencing in the city's District Court this week.
The Gilligans Drug Operation Uncovered
Queensland Police investigations revealed that cocaine was being supplied to patrons at Gilligans Backpackers hostel and bar between March and May 2022. The establishment, known for its vibrant party atmosphere and central location in the Cairns CBD, became the focus of a targeted police operation.
Detectives gathered evidence showing multiple individuals were involved in distributing the illicit substance within the popular tourist accommodation. The investigation culminated in charges being laid against four people for their varying roles in the drug supply network.
Court Sentences Handed Down
In Cairns District Court this week, Judge Anthony Rafter SC delivered sentences to all four defendants. Jett William Gaffney, 24, received the most severe penalty - two years imprisonment with immediate parole release on Tuesday.
Gaffney, who pleaded guilty to supplying dangerous drugs, had his sentence backdated to include time already served in custody. The court heard details of his involvement in the cocaine distribution network operating from the hostel.
Three other individuals connected to the case also faced sentencing:
- Rheanna Lace Lacey, 24 - Convicted and fined $1500
- Jake William Mikkelsen, 25 - Convicted and fined $1500
- Shannen Lee Warby, 29 - Received a wholly suspended 12-month prison sentence
All defendants had previously entered guilty pleas to drug supply charges related to the operation at Gilligans Backpackers.
