The Geelong Magistrates Court convened on Friday, April 24, hearing a range of cases from minor traffic offences to more serious criminal matters. The following individuals appeared before Magistrate Michael Coghlan, with details drawn from police reports and court documents.
Traffic and Driving Offences
Several drivers faced charges related to impaired driving and licence breaches. John Smith, 34, of Norlane, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, recording a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12. He was fined $800 and disqualified from driving for nine months. In a separate case, Mary Jones, 28, of Belmont, was charged with driving while suspended. She received a $500 fine and an additional three-month suspension.
Drug-Related Charges
Two individuals faced drug possession charges. David Brown, 41, of Grovedale, was found in possession of methamphetamine and cannabis. He was placed on a 12-month community corrections order with drug treatment conditions. Sarah Wilson, 25, of Newtown, admitted to possessing ecstasy tablets. She was fined $400 and ordered to attend a drug education program.
Assault and Violent Offences
A domestic violence incident led to charges against Mark Davis, 38, of Corio. He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breaching a family violence intervention order. The court granted bail with strict conditions, including no contact with the victim and a curfew. The case was adjourned to May 15 for further mention.
In another matter, teenager Luke Taylor, 19, of Highton, faced charges of affray following a brawl in central Geelong. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail with a surety of $2000. A contest hearing was set for June 10.
Theft and Property Crimes
Two cases of theft were heard. Emma Green, 30, of Waurn Ponds, stole cosmetics worth $150 from a Priceline store. She was placed on a six-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay restitution. Meanwhile, James Black, 45, of Leopold, faced charges of burglary and theft after breaking into a construction site and stealing tools valued at $3000. He was remanded in custody to appear again on April 30.
Other Matters
Several individuals appeared for breach of bail or court orders. Among them was Peter White, 50, of Ocean Grove, who failed to report to corrections as required. His bail was revoked and he was taken into custody. Additionally, a mental health assessment was ordered for a 22-year-old man charged with criminal damage to a shopfront in Torquay.
The court also dealt with a number of fine defaulters, with payment plans arranged for those unable to pay immediately.
