CCTV captures alleged stabbing spree in Merrylands, one dead, two injured

CCTV footage has captured the terrifying moment a woman was allegedly wounded in the chest during a violent stabbing spree by a man who reportedly escaped from mental health treatment less than two weeks ago. The incident occurred on Merrylands Rd in Merrylands around 10am on Wednesday, where three people were allegedly attacked by a man identified as Setefano Leaaetoa, using a knife measuring 20-30cm in length.

Details of the attack and victims

Two individuals were stabbed inside a shop, while another was attacked on the street. Tragically, a man aged between 30 and 40 died at the scene. A 22-year-old man sustained neck injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Additionally, a 47-year-old woman suffered abdominal and chest injuries and was transported to the same hospital in critical condition. A 25-year-old man has since been charged with murder in connection with the incident.

CCTV footage and witness accounts

The CCTV from inside the shop shows the moment Leaaetoa allegedly stabs the woman in the chest while she was conversing with the owner. She staggers away clutching her chest as the owner assists her upon realising her injuries. Witness Joseph Rouissi described hearing a "death scream of a lady" from across the road, calling it "absolutely horrible." Another witness, George Elcheikh, reported seeing someone bleeding from the throat, indicating a stabbing had occurred.

Police response and arrest

A police operation was swiftly established to locate the alleged offender, with officers locking down an area near the eastern side of the Merrylands train station. Approximately 40 minutes later, Leaaetoa was found behind a house on Smythe St and arrested without incident. NSW Police Superintendent Simon Glasser stated that the attack appeared random, though the motive remains unclear, and described it as "highly confronting" and a "horrible offence" given the timing near lunchtime with many people present.

Health district statement and background

In a statement, NSW Health Western Sydney Local Health District expressed sympathies to the families and victims, calling the incident "confronting and deeply distressing." The statement revealed that Leaaetoa had escaped from care on February 7 while being transferred from Cumberland Hospital to Westmead Hospital for emergency treatment, just two days after admission. NSW Police were notified, and attempts to locate him were unsuccessful, leading to a formal review now underway.

Aftermath and charges

Paramedics treated the three injured individuals at the scene, but one man succumbed to his injuries. The 25-year-old accused was taken to Granville Police Station and has an alleged history of low-level crime. The community remains shaken by this violent event, highlighting concerns over mental health care and public safety.
