Victoria Park Introduces Bin Tagging Initiative with Weekly $50 Rewards
The Town of Victoria Park has launched a new bin tagging program aimed at improving waste sorting among residents. Starting on February 16, 2026, and running until March 30, waste officers will conduct quick checks on kerbside bins, placing either a happy or sad face tag based on how rubbish is sorted. This initiative is designed to reduce contamination costs and prevent incidents like bin truck fires, such as one that occurred on February 4 due to incorrect disposal.
How the Bin Tagging Program Works
During the six-week period, officers will inspect only the top of bins in a non-invasive manner, without digging through contents. Approximately 10% of household bins will be checked, with no personal data recorded or fines imposed. Residents who sort their waste correctly will be entered into a weekly draw for a $50 voucher, with an overall $200 prize available. Mayor Karen Vernon emphasized the shared responsibility between the community and the town for proper waste disposal, highlighting efforts to promote recycling and reuse.
Community Reactions and Program Details
The announcement on social media and the town's website sparked mixed feedback. Some residents criticized the program as a waste of ratepayer money, while others expressed support, calling it a great idea and showing competitive enthusiasm. Regardless of the tag received, all bins will be collected on their scheduled days. For more details, residents can visit the Waste and Recycling section on the town's official website.
