Queensland Premier Steven Miles has launched a scathing attack on the state's peak local government body, demanding immediate explanations about the involvement of a councillor facing domestic violence charges in a major funding announcement.
The controversy erupted after Cairns Regional Council Deputy Mayor Brett Moller, who is currently facing domestic violence-related charges, participated in a significant joint funding announcement alongside the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).
Premier Takes Strong Stance
"I think it's completely inappropriate," Premier Miles stated emphatically when questioned about the situation. "I can't understand why the LGAQ would have someone facing those sorts of charges front and centre at an announcement like that."
The Premier revealed he had personally contacted LGAQ CEO Alison Smith to express his concerns and seek clarification about the decision-making process that led to Councillor Moller's involvement.
Charges and Professional Responsibilities
Court documents confirm that Brett Moller is facing one charge of common assault and two charges of contravening a domestic violence order. Despite these serious allegations, the councillor has maintained his position as Deputy Mayor of Cairns Regional Council.
When approached for comment, Moller directed all inquiries to the LGAQ, stating he was acting in his capacity as the association's Indigenous representative when participating in the announcement.
Community and Political Fallout
The situation has sparked significant concern within political circles and the broader community, particularly given Queensland's ongoing efforts to address domestic and family violence issues.
Premier Miles emphasised the importance of maintaining public confidence in government institutions, suggesting that the LGAQ's decision risked undermining community trust in local government processes and announcements.
The controversy raises important questions about the balance between presumption of innocence and appropriate representation in public roles, especially when serious charges are pending.
