The Shire of Murray has officially switched on the final set of high-tech surveillance cameras in Pinjarra, marking a major milestone for local security. The new automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system is now fully operational across the town, including a key installation at the intersection of South Western Highway and Paterson Road.
Technology Boosts Police Capabilities
This completion signals the end of stage one in the shire's CCTV expansion plan. The advanced cameras are designed to enhance public safety by providing real-time information directly to Western Australia Police. This capability is a powerful tool for preventing crime, aiding investigations, and enabling faster emergency responses.
Shire President Douglas McLarty emphasised the project's role in promoting community wellbeing. "This technology gives our local officers timely and reliable information, helping them respond more effectively and keep our community protected," Mr McLarty stated. He also highlighted the strong collaborative partnership with WA Police in striving for better safety outcomes for all residents.
Community Partnership Drives Funding
The significant $170,000 security upgrade received crucial support from corporate partner Alcoa. The mining giant contributed $75,000 in both 2024 and 2025 through its annual Community Assistance Funds, demonstrating a shared commitment to the area's security.
Alcoa's Pinjarra Alumina Refinery manager, Jodie Giraudo, praised the proactive initiative. "We're proud to partner with the shire in delivering this important CCTV network expansion to increase community safety, which aligns closely with one of our company's core values," Ms Giraudo said. The collaboration underscores how local government and industry can work together for tangible community benefit.
