Police Dog Duke's Bush Pursuit Nabs Alleged Cairns Car Thief
Police Dog Duke Chases Down Alleged Car Thief in Cairns

A police dog named Duke has become the hero of a dramatic Cairns pursuit, tracking down an alleged car thief through dense bushland after a failed attempt to escape authorities.

The Chase Through Cairns Suburbs

The incident began around 9:20 pm on Tuesday when police spotted a reportedly stolen Hyundai Tucson traveling through the southern Cairns suburb of Woree. Officers immediately attempted to intercept the vehicle, but the driver allegedly refused to stop, sparking a pursuit through residential streets.

Police followed the Hyundai as it sped through the area, but the chase was soon terminated due to safety concerns. The decision to call off the active pursuit didn't mean the hunt was over though - authorities maintained visual contact with the vehicle from a distance as it continued through the suburb.

Duke Takes Over the Hunt

The situation escalated when the 24-year-old Edmonton man allegedly abandoned the stolen vehicle on Aumuller Street and made a desperate dash into nearby bushland. Thinking he could escape through the dense vegetation, the man soon discovered he was no match for a determined police dog.

Police Dog Duke and his handler were immediately deployed to track the suspect through the challenging terrain. The skilled German Shepherd quickly picked up the scent and pursued the man through the dark bushland. Within a remarkably short time, Duke had located and apprehended the alleged thief, holding him until officers could make the arrest.

Charges and Aftermath

The Edmonton man now faces serious charges including unlawful use of a motor vehicle and evading police. He received medical treatment for a dog bite sustained during the apprehension before being released from hospital into police custody.

The man is scheduled to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday to answer to the charges. The successful operation demonstrates the invaluable role police dogs play in tracking and apprehending suspects who attempt to flee into difficult terrain.

This incident marks another victory for the Cairns Dog Squad, with Duke proving that even when suspects think they've escaped into bushland, there's no outrunning a determined police dog. The quick resolution prevented what could have been a prolonged search operation and potentially dangerous situation for the community.
