A major police investigation into the alleged illegal manufacture of firearms has led to a significant arrest, with a man now facing a string of charges after a toolbox containing rifles and 3D-printed parts was uncovered in the Hunter region.
Strike Force Raids Barnsley Property
Detectives from the State Crime Command's Drug and Firearms Squad, operating as Strike Force Leeville, executed a search warrant at a property in Barnsley in the Lake Macquarie area on September 23. The operation, supported by local Hunter Valley officers, targeted the suspected manufacture of prohibited weapons.
During a thorough search of the residence, police investigators made a critical discovery in the garage. They located a toolbox that allegedly contained two rifles and a collection of "numerous" 3D-printed firearm components. All items were seized for detailed forensic examination. Officers also spoke with a 59-year-old man present at the address.
Arrest at Silverwater Correctional Centre
Following months of further forensic testing and inquiries, which included a public appeal for information, strike force investigators moved to make an arrest. On the morning of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, they attended the correctional facility at Silverwater.
There, they took a 29-year-old man into custody. He was subsequently charged with a total of 16 serious offences. The charges notably include twelve counts of possessing a digital blueprint for the manufacture of firearms. He also faces two counts each of manufacturing a prohibited firearm and possessing an unauthorised firearm.
Court Appearance Scheduled
The accused man was refused bail and remanded in custody following his arrest. He is scheduled to appear before Burwood Local Court later in January to answer the fresh charges laid against him.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by NSW Police to combat the emerging threat of illicit firearms production using modern technology like 3D printing. The formation of specialised strike forces such as Leeville underscores the priority given to intercepting the manufacture and distribution of illegal weapons in the community.
