A Perth man has been handed a life sentence for the brutal 2022 murder of a young mother, whose body was discovered in a South Fremantle harbour.
A Life Cut Short: The Tragic Death of Helen Marsuk
Helen Marsuk, a 25-year-old from Koongamia in Perth's eastern suburbs, was described by her grieving family as a "beautiful young soul" whose loss would be deeply felt. In December 2022, her life was tragically cut short when she was stabbed multiple times.
Her body was discovered four days later in the early hours of Sunday, December 4, 2022. A member of the public made the grim discovery, finding Marsuk's body floating in the water near a groyne on Capo D'Orlando Drive in South Fremantle.
Justice Served: The Trial and Sentencing
Earlier this year, Muhammad Abdur Rehman Mirza, a 24-year-old from Gosnells, was found guilty of her murder. The homicide squad detectives had charged her killer just days after the discovery of her body.
On Thursday, the court delivered its final judgment. Mirza was jailed for life for his crime. The judge ruled that Mirza will be eligible for parole only after serving a minimum of 20 years behind bars.
A Community Mourns
The sentencing brings a form of closure to a case that has shocked the Perth community. Shortly after her death, relatives shared their heartbreak with 7NEWS, expressing how much Helen Marsuk would be missed by all who knew her.
This life sentence marks the end of the legal proceedings for a violent crime that took the life of a young woman and left a family and community in mourning.
