Governor-General Mostyn’s Welcoming Remarks

In her public address, Governor-General Mostyn expressed delight at hosting President Herzog and noted the historical significance of his visit. She referenced a visit by his father, former Israeli President Chaim Herzog, 40 years ago, sharing that a photo from that time had been discovered.

“I am struck by the fact that 40 years ago, this year, your father, the then-president, visited this place and attended a state dinner,” Ms Mostyn said, emphasising the continuity in diplomatic relations.

She also connected the visit to recent events, stating, “As soon as the events of Bondi took place, it was important for the Governor General to show fidelity with the Jewish Australians, with those affected at Bondi.” Her remarks highlighted the visit as a gesture of solidarity with grieving communities and a reaffirmation of safety and support.

Ms Mostyn concluded by welcoming the delegation and expressing anticipation for their discussions, reinforcing the role of Government House as a place of peace and inclusivity.

President Herzog’s Response and Historical Reflections

In reply, President Herzog conveyed honour at the reception and extended condolences to the Australian Jewish community, particularly in light of recent tragedies. He acknowledged the efforts of Australian leaders in combating anti-Semitism and supporting Jewish Australians.

“We are honoured to be here. It’s a great moment in relations between our nations,” he said, adding, “I come here to express our condolences and bereavement and pain and love to the Jewish community in Australia.”

Herzog emphasised the shared commitment to fighting anti-Semitism, stating, “We both share the need to fight anti-Semitism with no doubt in their mind so that we uproot this terrible phenomenon.” He also expressed hope for renewed bilateral relations, tracing historical connections back to Australia’s role in Israel’s founding.

“Your soldiers were the ones who liberated our land in 1917 which led to the creation of our state later on, and because you were the first nation to declare Israel’s right to exist and recognise it,” he noted, highlighting Australia’s early support for Israel.

Reflecting on personal history, Herzog mentioned seeing his father’s picture at the event, adding a familial touch to the diplomatic occasion. He expressed optimism that the visit would send a positive message to both nations.

Symbolism and Future Implications

This meeting serves as a poignant symbol of the enduring Australia-Israel relationship, blending ceremonial tradition with contemporary issues like anti-Semitism and community support. The presence of high-profile attendees from across the political spectrum underscores the broad consensus on fostering these ties.

As both leaders emphasised peace and solidarity, the event may pave the way for enhanced cooperation and dialogue in the coming years, reinforcing diplomatic and cultural bonds between the two countries.
