A 43-year-old man has been charged with murder following an alleged stabbing at a campsite in north-west New South Wales. Police say the incident occurred at a campsite off Danglemah Road, Woolbrook, about 66 kilometres north-east of Tamworth, around 6pm yesterday.
It is alleged that an altercation between two men led to a man in his 50s being stabbed several times in the chest and neck. NSW paramedics treated the victim, but he died at the scene.
The accused, Daniel Mark Kilkeary, made no application for bail during a court hearing this morning. His defence solicitor requested mental health assistance while in custody. Kilkeary is scheduled to reappear before Tamworth Local Court in late April.
Police arrested Kilkeary at the scene and seized a knife believed to have been used in the alleged incident. Oxley Police District Detective Inspector Tom Aylett stated that while witnesses are being interviewed, authorities believe there was only one offender.
Inspector Aylett noted that the deceased man is believed to have links to Queensland, and Queensland homicide detectives are assisting with the investigation. The motive for the alleged crime remains unknown, with investigators continuing to examine the background of the two individuals involved.
