Body Found in Darwin Harbour Near Naval Base

Northern Territory Police have launched a major search operation after a body was sighted floating in Darwin Harbour on Monday evening. The grim discovery was made near the Larrakeyah Naval Base, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Discovery and Disappearance

The deceased individual was first seen in the water beside an anchored military vessel. The sighting occurred near the wharf area of the Larrakeyah Naval Base, though not inside the secure defence precinct itself. Witnesses reported the body to authorities, but it had submerged below the surface by the time police arrived at the scene around 6:30pm.

Large-Scale Search Operation Activated

In response, a comprehensive search and rescue mission was swiftly initiated. Crews are utilising a multi-faceted approach to scour the area:

  • Aircraft for aerial surveillance
  • Multiple marine vessels and specialised rescue watercraft
  • Ground search teams along the shoreline

The operation is being conducted by Northern Territory Police with support from NT Surf Life Saving.

Description of the Deceased Man

Police have released a description of the man in the hope it may help identify him. He is believed to be an adult Caucasian with a slim build. He had medium-length grey hair and was wearing a light-coloured shirt at the time he was seen.

Authorities are now appealing to the public for assistance. "Police are seeking information from anyone who may hold concerns for a person who has failed to attend appointments or has been uncontactable, particularly in the Darwin Harbour area," an NT Police statement said.

Location and Defence Force Context

The Larrakeyah Naval Base is part of the larger Larrakeyah Defence Precinct, which is home to HMAS Coonawarra. The base is situated near the mouth of the Beagle Gulf and close to Darwin's city centre. The Royal Australian Navy website states almost 700 navy personnel are based there to support fleet operations.

However, the Royal Australian Navy has told media there is no evidence at this stage to suggest the person seen in the water was a Defence member. The investigation remains ongoing as search teams continue their efforts in Darwin Harbour.
