Illawarra boxing icon Shannan Taylor, famously nicknamed the "Bulli Blaster," has publicly revealed he is facing the most challenging fight of his life outside the ring. The former world champion disclosed on Tuesday via a heartfelt Facebook post that he has been diagnosed with stage four cancer, affecting his liver and bowel.
In his emotional announcement, Taylor expressed his resolve to confront this health battle with the same fierce determination that defined his boxing career. "I always wanted one more fight ... well, my fans, friends and family, I got it," he wrote. "The doctors confirmed today that I have stage four cancer. It is in my liver and my bowel. So this will be the fight of my life, and I plan to attack it the same way I prepared for all my fights ... GIVE MY ALL. I don't know any other way."
Community Rallies with Support and Encouragement
The news has sparked an overwhelming wave of love and solidarity from the local community and beyond, with numerous supporters flooding social media with messages of encouragement. Dave Russell commented, "You got this champ your fighting spirit will get you through ... all the best champ your a survivor you've already proved that." Jamie Wallace added, "Wow, terrible news Shannan. But you are a fighter brother and can beat this. My prayers are with you champion." Keith Cole urged, "Put the gloves back on one last time. Knock it out of the ring."
Taylor's life has been marked by both triumphs and challenges, frequently making headlines in the Illawarra Mercury. His boxing achievements include a memorable hometown victory in October 2011, where he defeated Sintung Kietbusaba to claim the World Boxing Foundation middleweight title. However, his career also faced setbacks, such as a heroin overdose the following month that required hospitalization in Wollongong. He retired with a professional record of 65 fights, including 52 wins and 37 knockouts.
Fundraising Efforts Planned to Aid Taylor's Battle
In response to his diagnosis, a fundraising event is being organized to support Taylor during this difficult time. The event is likely to be held soon in Bulli, aiming to mobilize the community to assist with medical expenses and other needs. This initiative reflects the deep connection and admiration many hold for the boxing legend, who has long been a prominent figure in the region.
As Taylor embarks on this personal health journey, his story serves as a poignant reminder of resilience and the power of community support. His unwavering spirit, honed through years in the ring, now faces a new adversary, but with the backing of fans and loved ones, he remains determined to give his all in this fight.
