Couple Killed in Christmas Eve Car Crash in Townsville

A husband and wife have died after being struck by a car on Christmas Eve in Townsville, with their daughter witnessing the incident. The victims, a 76-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman from Cairns, were hit by an SUV on Ross River Road in the suburb of Hermit Park.

The couple had just attended a Christmas Eve church service and were walking when the accident occurred shortly after 7:00pm. Their 43-year-old daughter spoke to police at the scene.

The driver, a 36-year-old man, was taken to Townsville hospital for treatment. He has not been charged, and investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.

Police Acting Inspector Steve Batterham appealed for witnesses to come forward. The forensic crash unit attended the scene and collected evidence, including photographs and distance markings, to establish the speed and other factors involved.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson described the scene as incredibly distressing.
