High-End Sunscreens Recalled in Australia Over SPF Protection Concerns
Several high-priced sunscreens have been withdrawn from Australian shelves amid serious concerns that they may not deliver the level of sun protection advertised to consumers. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has issued a formal recall for Medik8’s Physical Sunscreen SPF50+ 60mL, Professional 60mL, and Try Me 15mL products, owned by AC Newco Pty Ltd.
Regulatory Warnings and Safety Risks
The TGA has explicitly stated that these sunscreens are unlikely to meet their labelled SPF rating, posing significant health risks. There is a genuine danger that a lower-than-labelled SPF rating could increase the risk of sunburn during use and reduce the long-term effectiveness in preventing skin cancer, according to the regulator. Medik8 has clarified that while the formula itself is safe, certain batches may offer sun protection that falls short of the advertised SPF levels.
Affected Products and Distribution Details
The recalled products were sold in both Australia and New Zealand between August 2023 and March 2026. Specific batch codes impacted include A1798A and A1798B, with expiry dates set for August 2026, as well as A2651, A2651A, and A2651B, which expire in April 2028. Notably, the 15mL tube was also included in the Medik8 Post Treatment Kit, broadening the scope of the recall.
Consumer Impact and Financial Considerations
One of the recalled items, the Physical Sunscreen SPF50+ 60mL, has been listed online for prices as high as $106, highlighting the premium nature of these products. A Medik8 spokesperson confirmed that there have been no reports of adverse effects to date. Following independent testing that suggested the Medik8 Physical Sunscreen SPF 50+ may provide lower sun protection than advertised, Medik8 has initiated a voluntary recall of all unexpired batches sold in Australia and New Zealand between August 2023 and March 2026, the spokesperson explained.
Recall Procedures and Refund Information
Consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected sunscreens immediately. Since this formula has been discontinued, individuals should contact their point of purchase or visit medik8.com.au/pages/recall to arrange a full refund. The TGA has also urged purchasers to return the product to the place of purchase or reach out via email at medik8spfrecall@acskingroup.com or by phone at 02 7248 5617, providing photo evidence or proof of purchase to facilitate the return and refund process.
This recall underscores the critical importance of sunscreen efficacy in protecting against sun damage and skin cancer, particularly in Australia’s harsh climate. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure consumer safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
