Simple Pond with Water Lilies Adds Soul to Any Garden

Adding a pond to a garden can transform the space, attracting wildlife and providing endless fascination for children. One gardener shared their experience of installing a pond, noting that while dragonflies and birds are frequent visitors, the water lilies truly give the garden soul.

Water lilies enhance planting schemes and create anticipation as flowers slowly rise to the surface. To start, choose a large container such as a glazed ceramic pot, half wine barrel, trough, or sturdy plastic tub. A larger volume of water ensures stability; a 1-meter-wide, 60-centimeter-deep pot works well.

Place the pond in a spot receiving at least 5–6 hours of sunlight daily, as water lilies need sun to bloom. Avoid moving the pot once filled. Skip pumps and filters—let fish waste feed plants, and plants oxygenate water for fish, which also control mosquito larvae. Water lilies prefer still water.

Use aquatic planting mix from an aquarium shop, not standard potting soil. Fill a wide, shallow planting basket three-quarters full with the mix. Position the lily rhizome at a slight angle with the growing tip upward, just at the surface. Firm soil around it without burying the crown, and top dress with washed gravel to prevent clouding.

Lower the basket so the crown sits 10–15 centimeters below the water surface initially, using bricks or upturned pots to adjust height. As the plant establishes, lower it to 20–40 centimeters for most dwarf and small lilies. Fill the pond slowly and enjoy.

Maintenance involves removing yellowing leaves and spent flowers to prevent rot and algae. Algae is normal initially; as lily leaves cover 60–70% of the surface, the water balances naturally. Weekly, remove a few buckets of water for garden use and top up with fresh water. Once foliage is established, add fish to eat insect larvae; their waste feeds plants, supplemented occasionally with aquatic fertilizer tablets. For a natural edge, consider native fringe lily (Nymphoides species), which complements larger lilies with delicate yellow flowers.
