Severe Storms Threaten Yass and Cooma After Canberra Warning Lifted

The Bureau of Meteorology has lifted its severe weather warning for Canberra, but residents in Yass and Cooma are being urged to prepare for life-threatening flash flooding, damaging winds, and large hailstones over the next several hours.

In a warning issued around 5:40pm on March 21, the bureau stated that an upper-level trough is aligning with a surface trough over the southern half of the state, producing slow-moving severe thunderstorms in a humid environment.

Earlier, at 3:30pm, the bureau warned that slow-moving storms could bring significant showers and severe hail to most of the territory and surrounding areas, including Goulburn, Yass, Young, and Bowral. Goulburn reportedly received 32.5 millimetres of rain within 30 minutes.

Residents are advised to park cars under secure cover away from trees, powerlines, and drains; secure loose items around properties; stay indoors away from windows; and keep children and pets inside. Those trapped by flash flooding should seek the highest available place and call 000 if rescue is needed.
