P-plater cops hefty fine and licence suspension for speeding in Hunter Valley
A P-plater has been hit with a significant financial penalty and a driving ban after being caught speeding on a rural road in the Hunter Valley. The incident occurred on Monday morning, highlighting the serious consequences of reckless driving behaviour.
Details of the speeding offence
Police reported that the green P-plater, also known as a P2 driver, was detected travelling at 128 kilometres per hour on Kayuga Road near Muswellbrook. This speed was recorded in an area with a signposted limit of 80km/h, meaning the driver was exceeding the limit by more than 45km/h.
Hunter Valley highway patrol officers promptly stopped the vehicle and issued a fine of $3054 for the severe speeding violation. In addition to this, the driver received a further $330 fine for failing to display P-plates on the vehicle.
Licence suspension and driver's explanation
As a result of the offence, the driver's licence was suspended for a period of six months. Police stated that during the interaction, the driver admitted to being "late for work" and was likely using the back road to avoid traffic and reach their destination more quickly.
Authorities emphasised that this decision was ill-advised, with Hunter Valley police commenting, "Perhaps a phone call to the boss about being late was the better decision in hindsight."
Police warning ahead of Easter long weekend
With the Easter long weekend approaching, police used this incident to appeal to the public to make safer choices on the roads. They urged drivers to consider the safety of themselves and other road users, stressing that patrols are active on both major thoroughfares and back roads.
This case serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement officers monitor all types of roads, and speeding can lead to severe penalties, including substantial fines and licence suspensions.
