Man in Critical Condition After Car Wraps Around Palm Tree in Townsville
A 31-year-old man is fighting for life after a severe car crash in Townsville, Queensland, where his vehicle wrapped around a palm tree, snapping it in two and leaving him trapped in the wreckage for over an hour.
Details of the Incident
The crash occurred at approximately 4.45am on Monday at the intersection of McLeod and Hammett streets in Currajong, Townsville. According to reports, the car lost control, veered off the roadway, and collided with a palm tree with such force that the tree was split in half, crushing the vehicle and trapping the driver inside.
Senior fire fighter Anthony Reay described the scene as challenging, noting that the car had been turned on its side, making the rescue operation prolonged and complex. Emergency crews, including fire and rescue services, worked diligently to stabilise the car using a winch before employing the Jaws of Life and other specialist equipment to gain access to the man.
Rescue Efforts and Injuries
It took emergency services more than an hour to free the man from the wreckage. Crews managed to open the roof of the car by pulling the metal in half, allowing paramedics to provide immediate medical attention. The man was then rushed to hospital with critical pelvic and abdominal injuries.
Senior sergeant Brett Smith commented on the severity of the incident, stating that the man had been trapped for some time after the crash. Multiple emergency services were involved in the operation, focusing on stabilising the patient while working on the vehicle.

Authorities are urging anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact police as investigations remain ongoing. The community is reminded to exercise caution on the roads, especially during early morning hours when visibility and conditions can be hazardous.
