A 22-year-old man from Townsville is facing serious charges after police allege he lost control of his car while performing burnouts, crashing into a traffic island.
Police Respond to Reckless Driving Incident
The incident occurred on Sunday, March 16, around 8:45 PM on Bayswater Road in Cranbrook. According to Queensland Police, officers were called to the scene following reports of a vehicle doing burnouts. Upon arrival, they found a Holden Commodore that had crashed.
The driver, a 22-year-old Rasmussen man, was allegedly performing a burnout when he lost control of the vehicle. The car mounted a traffic island, causing significant damage. Police confirmed the man was the sole occupant and was not injured in the crash.
Vehicle Seized and Charges Laid
Following the incident, police took swift action. The man's Holden Commodore was immediately seized under Queensland's hooning legislation.
The young driver was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court at a later date to answer to the charge.
A Strong Reminder from Local Police
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson used the incident to issue a stern warning to the community. The spokesperson emphasised that dangerous driving and hooning behaviour put everyone at risk.
"This type of behaviour is not only illegal but incredibly dangerous to the driver, passengers, and other road users," the spokesperson stated. They reiterated the police's commitment to targeting anti-social driving and reminded the public that vehicles used in such activities can be confiscated.
The police seizure of the car serves as a tangible consequence under laws designed to curb reckless driving. The community is encouraged to report hooning or dangerous driving to Policelink.
