Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that ignited a dangerous grass fire on South Australia's Limestone Coast in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Early Morning Crash Ignites Blaze
Emergency services were called to O'Leary Road near Pine Hall Avenue in Suttontown, approximately 433 kilometres from Adelaide, at about 3:15 am on Thursday. Authorities reported that a Holden hatchback had left the roadway, crashed through a fence, and come to rest in a paddock where it burst into flames.
The intense fire from the vehicle quickly spread to the surrounding dry vegetation, triggering a significant grass fire that threatened the rural area. Firefighters managed to bring the inferno under control before it could reach a nearby home, preventing further tragedy.
Body Found in Burnt-Out Vehicle
Once the blaze was extinguished, a grim discovery was made. A body was found inside the burnt-out wreckage of the Holden. Police are now working to formally identify the victim and notify their next of kin.
Specialist Major Crash investigators travelled from Adelaide to the scene to conduct a thorough examination. Their work will focus on determining the exact circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the road.
Road Reopens as Investigation Continues
The crash scene caused significant disruption, with O'Leary Road and Pine Hall Avenue closed for most of Thursday for the police investigation and clean-up. Authorities indicated the roads were expected to reopen by Thursday evening.
This tragic incident marks the fourth life lost on South Australian roads since the start of the year, adding to the state's 2024 road toll. The investigation remains ongoing as police appeal for any witnesses to come forward.
