Weapons, cannabis seized in Far North Queensland raids

Far North Queensland police have made a significant breakthrough, seizing a large arsenal of weapons and hundreds of cannabis plants in a series of targeted raids. The operation, which unfolded across multiple properties, has led to serious charges against several individuals.

Major police operation targets weapons and drugs

The coordinated police action took place on Thursday, 16 May 2024, focusing on locations in the Cairns suburbs of Manoora and Manunda. Officers from the Cairns Property Crime Team executed search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged trafficking of dangerous drugs and weapons in the region.

During the searches, police uncovered what they described as a concerning collection of weaponry. The seized items included a .22 calibre rifle, a shotgun, a crossbow, a flick knife, a set of knuckledusters, and a large quantity of ammunition. The discovery of these weapons has raised serious safety concerns for the local community.

In addition to the weapons, the police operation led to the discovery of a substantial cannabis cultivation site. At a property on Pease Street in Manoora, investigators found and seized 262 cannabis plants along with sophisticated equipment used for growing the illicit drug.

The scale of the cultivation suggests a commercial operation, far beyond personal use. The seizure represents a major disruption to the local supply of illegal drugs and is a significant win for law enforcement in the area.

Multiple arrests and charges laid

The raids resulted in the arrest of several people. A 40-year-old Manoora man faced the Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday, 17 May, charged with a range of offences including:

  • Possessing dangerous drugs
  • Producing dangerous drugs
  • Possessing anything used in the commission of a crime
  • Unlawful possession of weapons
  • Possessing a knife in a public place

A 35-year-old Manunda woman was also arrested and charged with possessing dangerous drugs and unlawful possession of a weapon. She is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court at a later date. Police investigations remain ongoing, indicating that further arrests or charges may be possible.

Detective Acting Inspector Kevin Goan of the Cairns Property Crime Team emphasised the seriousness of the finds. He stated that the removal of such a quantity of weapons and drugs from the community significantly enhances public safety. The operation demonstrates the continued focus of Far North Queensland police on targeting those involved in the illicit drug trade and the associated violence often linked to weapons.
