Queensland Python Hitches 1000km Ride to NSW Central Coast in Car
Snake stows away for 1000km interstate car trip

A routine snake rescue call on the New South Wales Central Coast turned into a remarkable interstate discovery for a local reptile expert.

An Unexpected Interstate Stowaway

Dylan Wallis, head of reptiles at the Australian Reptile Park, responded to a call for help regarding a python entangled in a car's undercarriage. He initially believed he was dealing with a local diamond python.

"I thought this was going to be a diamond python," Wallis said. "But in fact, it was actually a coastal carpet python from all the way up in Queensland."

The driver, identified only as Anthony, revealed he had driven from Toowoomba in Queensland to visit family on the Central Coast, a journey exceeding 1000 kilometres. The snake had been an unwitting passenger for at least eight hours.

A Long and Lucky Journey

The coastal carpet python was discovered tightly curled around the vehicle's fuel tank. This species is typically found throughout Queensland and far northern NSW, making its presence on the Central Coast extremely rare.

Wallis expressed his astonishment, stating it was something he had "never seen before." He added, "We see many snakes in cars but never one that has travelled that far — let alone across state lines."

Remarkably, the snake survived the long, hot drive. Its survival was attributed to its specific hiding spot. "Right next to him were the turning wheels, creating enough ventilation to keep him nice and cool," Wallis explained.

Safe Return and Public Warning

Following its unexpected adventure, the python was safely retrieved. With assistance from wildlife rescue organisation WIRES, the snake was relocated back to Queensland and released into a suitable national park.

While this particular stowaway was a non-venomous python, the Australian Reptile Park issued a timely reminder to the public. As temperatures increase, venomous snakes can just as easily find their way into cars, garages, and backyards.

The key advice from experts is clear: if you encounter a snake near your vehicle or home, always seek professional assistance from a licensed snake catcher or wildlife group. Do not attempt to handle or remove the animal yourself.
