A man has died following a violent stabbing at a residential building in Melbourne's inner north on Monday night, with homicide detectives now leading the investigation.

Emergency services were called to an address on Napier Street in Fitzroy shortly before 9:45pm on Monday after reports of an assault. Upon arrival, they discovered a man with serious stab wounds.
