A 39-year-old man has been taken into custody by Northern Territory police following the alleged fatal stabbing of another man in a remote community on Boxing Day.
Violent Incident in Remote Laramba
Emergency services were called to the small community of Laramba in the early hours of December 26 after reports of an aggravated assault. The call came in at approximately 4:40am, with the location situated roughly a two-hour drive east of Yuendumu in the central Northern Territory.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered a 35-year-old man who had allegedly suffered a stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to a nearby medical clinic for urgent treatment but, tragically, could not be saved and died from his injuries.
Multi-Unit Police Response and Arrest
A significant police response was mobilised to the scene. Officers from the Ti Tree, Yuendumu, and Alice Springs stations arrived shortly after the incident to begin their initial investigations.
Their inquiries led to the arrest of a 39-year-old man from Yuendumu at about 1pm on Saturday, December 27 – one day after the fatal event. The suspect remains in custody while detectives continue their work.
Ongoing Major Crime Investigation
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death and the alleged offender's involvement are ongoing and have been escalated. The case has now been joined by detectives from the Major Crime Unit and Southern Investigations branch.
Charges are yet to be laid as the investigation proceeds. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact them to assist with inquiries.
