Large areas of Victoria are being lashed by severe thunderstorms and heavy rain, with authorities urgently warning residents to prepare for dangerous flash flooding. Communities across northern and central parts of the state, including Melbourne, are forecast to be impacted by wild weather from Tuesday afternoon.
Bureau of Meteorology Issues Critical Warnings
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a stark alert, predicting very dangerous thunderstorms by 3pm in Melbourne, likely to cause intense rainfall and rapid flash flooding. The weather system is moving towards the southeast and is expected to affect suburbs such as Glen Waverley, Ringwood, Lilydale, Dandenong, Belgrave, and Berwick by late afternoon.
Rainfall totals of 40 to 70mm are anticipated across Victoria, heightening the risk of flooding in low-lying and creekside areas. Victoria State Emergency Service spokesperson Josh Gamble emphasized the urgency, stating, Flash flooding happens fast. Roads can become very dangerous very quickly. It's deeper than it looks.
Emergency Services Urge Caution and Preparedness
Residents are advised to remain on high alert for flash flooding in the coming hours, particularly in known flash flood zones around Melbourne. The SES has strongly urged motorists to avoid travel if possible. If commuting is necessary, drivers should steer clear of floodwater, mud, and debris to ensure safety.
Additionally, residents should secure loose items like umbrellas and trampolines and move vehicles away from trees to prevent damage. The SES continues to monitor the situation closely, with personnel already responding to incidents, such as blocking a flooded underpass in South Melbourne.
